Overview

Akwaaba Meat & Fish Market, West Indian Store, nestled in the heart of Newark, NJ, offers a vibrant Caribbean dining experience that feels both authentic and welcoming. Specializing in Guyanese and broader Caribbean flavors, this spot stands out not only as a restaurant but also as a West Indian market, making it a unique one-stop destination for food lovers seeking the rich tastes and spices of the Caribbean islands.

The main dishes, such as the goat curry, chicken curry combos served with rice, roti, or dhal puri, and the iconic bake and saltfish, capture the essence of Caribbean home cooking. Each plate is generous, full of bold seasoning and hearty ingredients, providing an honest taste of Guyanese cuisine. What makes Akwaaba particularly distinctive is the blend of Guyanese staples alongside West Indian market goods, allowing guests to shop for authentic spices, snacks like cassava pone, and a variety of traditional sweets.

Patrons often praise the care and warmth extended by the staff, including the owner and their family, whose organization and attentiveness enhance the overall visit. The atmosphere feels like a neighborhood gem, bustling with community energy and a steady flow of regulars. The space, while practical and market-oriented, cultivates a sense of familiarity that invites both new visitors and Caribbean food aficionados.

Signature highlights include fried rice and cassareep chicken. Many appreciate the halal options and the fusion of flavors that reflect Guyana’s multicultural background, such as chow mein with Caribbean spices. The menu’s inclusion of snacks like soft mithai and pink and white fudge adds a sweet finish, showcasing the diversity beyond savory dishes.

While most dishes hit the mark, some customers have noted that the duck curry could use refinement, a reminder that even beloved recipes evolve over time. Nevertheless, Akwaaba remains a must-visit for those craving authentic Caribbean food in the Newark area or anyone seeking to explore flavors beyond typical fast-casual offerings.

For travelers coming from afar or locals wanting a taste of home, this place offers a genuine Caribbean culinary journey grounded in tradition, quality, and community spirit.

Customer service is great. Owner, wife, and workers are great. Very organized. I enjoy ordering food to go, pick up, or deliver. The only complaint I have is their duck curry that I look forward to, and that is a disappointment! I tried 3 times and very displeased. They should allow someone else to cook duck curry, cause that is expensive and special food. They can't have a cook keep destroying a great dish like this. I have had plenty of Guyanese duck curry from various cooks and regular home cook, and they are so tasty, but this one is simply an insult to the duck itself, and that explains it all. I don't want to go too deep in this, I'm not here to degrade or insult anyone. Just give someone else to cook it, and when I'll get some next, I'll place a comment here again.

Ordered roti, sugar cakes, and ginger sugar cakes. Everything was very tasty and fresh. Looking forward to more delicious offerings. Would be nice to have a daily menu and a detailed description of the dishes. Each Caribbean country has a different name for different dishes. But over all a great start! Good Luck.

Traveled all the way from PA to find this Gem. Had their fried snapper, peppershrimp, snapper curry, Chinese fried rice and fruit cake. It was the best I had since I left Guyana. A Guyanese place I would recommend for high quality food. Also bought lots of snacks and groceries. This place is unique. A one stop shop.

If you’re looking for quality West Indian meats and fish, Akwaaba Meat and Fish is the spot. From fresh goat, oxtail, and curry-ready chicken to well-seasoned fish and smoked meats, they’ve got everything you need to cook a proper Caribbean meal. The selection is solid and always fresh, and they often carry all the staples—green bananas, plantains, scotch bonnet peppers, and seasonings you’d usually have to go to three different stores to find. You can tell they take pride in offering authentic West Indian cuts and ingredients. The staff is friendly, and the service is quick and no-nonsense—just how we like it. The place is clean and well-organized, and they’ll even help you prep your order if you ask. Whether you’re cooking curry goat, stew peas, escovitch fish, or Sunday rice and peas, Akwaaba has what you need. Highly recommend for anyone craving real island flavor!
